Picking the right icing recipe for you cakes depends on your preferable taste and function. Several frosting recipes are commonly used for covering the outer part of the cake and not as a decoration. Below are two simple icing recipes that is frequently used for decorating cakes.

Ingredients:

2 pounds of confectioner’s sugar

2 teaspoons of vanilla

½ cup of milk

1 pound of butter or (optional) shortening

Instructions:

Place in the mixer bowl. Mix it with low until it became a little softened. Then, add the vanilla. Add the confectioner’s sugar slowly or 1 cup at a time. Mix it in low.

Slowly add the milk until you reach your desired consistency. In case of accidentally adding too much milk and you don’t have any extra confectioner’s sugar, then the buttercream frosting can only be use to frost the cake. It is better you will take time in adding the milk to get the desired consistency.

When piping with this buttercream icing recipe above. Keep in mind to not over beat because too much air bubbles will just give you problem during the process of decorating.

Ingredients:

1 ½ cup of shortening

2 pounds of confectioner’s sugar

½ cup of water

1 ½ teaspoon of clear vanilla or any desired flavoring

Instructions:

Mix the shortening then add the sugar mix them well. Add the ½ cup of water and the flavoring. Mix them in low to prevent air bubbles to form. Cover the bowl moist towel. This icing recipe is enough to cover an average of 1 mix size of cake.

Notes to remember:

  1. If you want to use the entire recipe in icing, make sure that after mixing together the ingredients, you must add additional 2 tablespoon of liquid.

  2. You can store the icing in a refrigerator for up to 2 weeks of if frozen 2 months.

  3. If you want a better tasting icing, substitute half of the shortening for butter. Also substitute the milk with water. If you are using the icing for practicing, use all water and shortening because it holds better.
