Digital Photography Tips

If you’re new to digital photography, you’re probably eager to get some tips on how to improve your skills. That’s good! While photography may look easy, getting results that anyone (yourself included) will want to look at more than once is actually quite difficult. Luckily, the process of improving your skills can be a fun one.

Here are some of the best tips on ways to improve your skills:

#1: Read the manual. It sound obvious, but until you read the manual you won’t know exactly what your camera can and can’t do. Camera manuals today are generally very user-friendly and well written, so you should be able to get a lot out of yours.

#2: Invest in a subscription to a good magazine. No matter where in the world you live you’re bound to find at least one magazine dedicated to photography that you can buy. This will bring you gear reviews, great photos, competitions, and new techniques for you to try. This is a great way to stay motivated to keep taking pictures and keep improving.

#3: Set yourself regular assignments. These can be based on subject matter (bands, portraits, street photography where you live), different techniques (HDR, black and white, shallow DOF, macro), or themes. For best results, post your shots online (there are many websites for this) so that you can get feedback.

#4: Look at a lot of photography. Seeing other people’s photos, finding what you like, and even trying to replicate it, is a great way to improve your photography. You’ll find great photography in galleries and magazines, but the best source today is the internet, as it’s so convenient and there is a vast amount of great work available to look at for free.

#5: Shoot! Looking at other people’s photos, reading, and studying techniques can all make your road to photography skill shorter, but you still need to experiment, experiment, and experiment some more if you truly want to get good. Some photographers say that you haven’t got a hope of taking a good photo until you’ve taken at least 10,000 bad ones!
