Classroom: What Is Debt Consolidation - How Does Debt Consolidation Work

If you have financial problems getting some help in organizing your money can go a long way to helping you get out of debt or finding out how much money you actually have. Credit counselors can help with this or you can hire a financial planner to plot out your resources.

One thing to consider when looking for a planner is can you afford it? Most financial planners charge about $200 an hour and many might not think this is worth it; nor have the funds to pay for one. Some banks offer this type of financial advice and their visits are usually free, so you might want to go this route instead.

Financial planners can help you figure out what stocks you should invest in to what insurance policy you should choose. When buying a home they can help with mortgage planning to how much a house will really cost you and if you can afford it.

Planners charge about 1% - 2% of a person’s assets for hands on money management. This might be a little out of some people’s range of budget, but if you really believe you need the help it could be a good investment.

When choosing a planner do your research by checking with the Better Business Bureau and the National Association of Personal Financial Advisors. There seems to be a low complaint rate so you should be able to find a planner to suit your needs.

Many people are able to organize their own finances easily without the help of a professional. It may not be necessary to seek outside help unless your income exceeds $100,000 a year. Learning about investing, credit and savings should be an important part of your normal routine. Banks can give you the information you require and can answer questions on investing, mortgages and even credit ratings.
