Female Thinning Hair - Women And Hair Loss
Female thinning hair can be caused by many variables from spiraling hormones to emotional stress. Millions of women suffering from hair loss are very often embarrassed by it, which causes an impact to her self esteem.
When the hair loses it's fullness it takes on the appearance of being thin and brittle. There can be excessive breakage, and lack of shine and luster. Hair thinning begins most often at the top of the head, otherwise known as the crown. It will continue until steps are taken to prevent it. This is why treatment must start as soon as it is noticed that hair loss is occurring.

It is a fact that fifty to one-hundred hairs are shed each day. It normally happens in cycles or during change of seasons. Women may notice more shedding and hair loss during the months of warmer weather and less shedding during the winter months.
Female thinning hair may be due to:
- Stress
- Thyroid dysfunction
- Genetics
- Illness
- Poor hair care
- Reduced estrogen level, such as after pregnancy and menopause
- Accumulation of DHT on the scalp
DHT, a byproduct of testosterone, can collect on the scalp and damage the hair shaft. Using gentle cleaning shampoos and conditioners are effective in removing a buildup of DHT and it's harmful effects on thinning hair.
Low estrogen levels, such as what happens during menopause and after pregnancy can induce hair loss. Pregnant women experience major hair growth due to the higher levels of estrogen in the body. Conversely, she may suffer some hair loss after delivery because of the reduction of estrogen levels.
It is important to take proper care of the hair at all times. Hair that is well groomed and conditioned not only looks good, but hair growth will flourish. Avoid tight braids and ponytails, as they can cause hair breakage, particularly around the hair line. To avoid friction to the hair while sleeping, and particularly if hair is long, secure your hair in a loose braid to prevent breakage and hair fall out. Sleeping on a satin pillow is also highly recommended.
Regular massaging of the scalp will bring up natural oils to nourish the hair root and may keep the scalp from becoming overly dry.
Family genes can cause female hair thinning, for which there is no cure. In spite of this, there are treatments to reduce the risks. This does not mean that if a close family member has hair loss that you will have it too. It just means that your risks for hair thinning are increased.
Thyroid glands that are not producing sufficient amounts of thyroid hormone can induce hair loss. This can be remedied by taking your thyroid medications as prescribed to keep hormone level within normal limits. You can also use shampoos and conditioners that are conducive to hair growth.
Stress is a well known factor in women and hair loss. The constant bombardment of the hormones of stress will affect the whole body. Stress is good at times, especially for the fight or flight response to a stressful event. However, the body needs respite from constant stress or there will be health consequences, such as hair loss.
Female hair thinning can be reversed when the underlying cause is diagnosed and treated. The use of natural hair care products that contain the necessary vitamins, minerals, and nutrients for hair growth can be of extreme benefit to help stop hair loss.
