Getting a divorce can be an expensive experience. With the lawyers, document filings and court costs - these fees can add up in a hurry. Is it possible to get a divorce without the help of a lawyer? Yes it is - if the divorce is uncomplicated and uncontested, couples can get a divorce pretty easily without the use of a lawyer. The first step being making sure your state allows divorce without a lawyer.

If there are no assets to divide, or if any assets the couple has have already been divided - you can choose an inexpensive divorce called Pro Se Divorce. In essence, it’s the filing of the divorce papers without the use of any lawyers. This can also be done if there are no children involved, or if custody is already agreed on.

For the most part, a Pro Se Divorce is used mainly by couples due to financial concerns. Being a more economical means of ending the marriage - but there are other reasons as well. this type of divorce is not necessarily an easy route to take. Both partners must not contest the divorce, and each spouse must make their own filing.

One thing to consider is if at least one partner is in the military, the couple might still want to get a lawyer. There are added considerations to this type of divorce. There is added paperwork, so it might be a good idea to consult a lawyer who is well versed in military divorces.

Bear in mind these divorces do not include alimony or any kind of support payments. You must decide this is a completely no fault divorce and not expect any type of settlement from either spouse.

If everything is settled, all that is needed is to pick up the forms, filling them out - sometimes these will need to be notarized. You can have this done at either a law office, or in some cases the Post Office. You may not even have to go to court to file as some states allow you to file online.

Once you file online, you will receive a notice to appear for a hearing from either a judge’s clerk, or a family law clerk. It is possible you may not need to appear in court if both spouses agree to this divorce.
