Gout Remedies and Pain Relief

Gout in any form is terribly painful, which requires medical intervention for the prevention of future attacks, as well as remedies for pain relief.

Gout is a type of inflammatory arthritis that affects the bones and joints of the hands, wrists, elbows, ankles, and feet. It is cause by increased levels of uric acid in the blood, which is a product of the metabolizing of the purines. Purines are beneficial for the prevention of damage to the blood vessels of the body. When uric acid builds up in the blood, it causes urate crystals to form in the soft tissues (tophi), as well as the joints. This causes severe pain, swelling, and inflammation, all of which need medications to reduce the symptoms.

Remedies and Pain relief:

NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) - such as Ibuprofen and naproxen which aid in reducing the inflammatory process.

Colchicine - Colchicine is often given to patients when NSAIDs is contraindicated.

Steroids - Works to both fight inflammation and reduce pain.

Medications that help prevent future gout attacks:

These medications act to prevent or lessen the number of attacks that occur, and are usually administered after an attack has resolved and no further symptoms exist. These medications include:

Allopurinol (Zyloprim): Decreases the level of uric acid in the blood, thus decreasing the chances of a recurring attack. Side effects include rash and possible low blood count.

Probenecid: Aids in removing uric acid from the body. Side effects include rash, stomach pains, and kidney stones.

Febuxostat is a new anti-gout drug, which is awaiting FDA approval. So far results are promising that this drug is successful in reducing urate levels in the blood.

Nutrition:

Eating a healthy diet is good for the body. There are foods you can eat that are low in purines, as well as food that may be high in purines (if eaten in moderation) that can help to prevent future attacks of gout. It is also recommended to drink plenty of water, which will help to lower uric acid levels in the blood.

Uric acid is excreted by the kidneys, therefore, drinking plenty of fluids will help to flush the kidneys, reduce uric acid levels, and remove unwanted impurities from your system.

Physical activity:

It is a fact that most people with gout are at least 15% over weight. You can further reduce the incidence of gouty arthritis attacks by increasing your exercise to about three times per week. This will help you to lose weight and prevent the stiffening of the joints, which is a complication of gout.

Gout can be effectively managed when you take the time to care for your body. Eat well, drink plenty of fluids, get plenty of exercise, and take your medications as directed by your doctor.
