Most of the scenic wonders of Mpumalanga are within easy reach from the tiny town of Graskop. Another relaxed and laid back area that washes all the stress away. Graskop has a high rainfall and thick mist is a regular occurrence in the summer.

Graskop relies heavily on tourism and caters for all tastes and preferences.

WHAT TO DO IN GRASKOP

The famous Mac Mac Falls is a must see. The vendor market at the entrance to the Falls has an array of African crafts at a fraction of the shop prices. This initiative provides a wonderful opportunity for the many poor rural Africans.

Just outside Graskop is God's window. It is said that on a clear day the boats in the Maputo (Capital of Mozambique) harbour are visible. In the parking area you will find another huge open air craft market with very reasonably priced original African art.

About 35 km from God's window on the R532 is the Bourke's Luck potholes. Water carved the rocks into smooth surfaced potholes that looks like over sized swimming pools. The potholes are connected with bridges and pathways for an excellent view of this natural wonder. A 180m circular path is accessible to wheelchairs.

Bourke's Luck is the start of the Blyde River Canyon, the third largest canyon in the world. The Canyon ends at the Three Rondavels, three grass filled rock formations in the mountain that looks like huge huts. Rondavel is the Afrikaans word for hut.

WHERE TO STAY IN GRASKOP

Pinnacle Lodge is the Backpackers option with en-suite bathrooms facilities situated in a beautiful garden close to town and all the amenities.

Settler’s Village also close to the town offers 8 very private self catering chalets.

Zur Alten Mine is about 4 kilometers outside Graskop with log cabins lacing the fringes of the forest. The chalets are self catering but a traditional German Breakfast is available on request.

For some real luxury try Flycatcher Castle on the edge of town and spend a night with Mozart or Pucinni. The five individually decorated suites are all named after classical composers.

WHERE TO EAT IN GRASKOP

Pancakes and Graskop go together. Nobody leaves without trying it at least once. Once is seldom enough.

The best place is Harrie’s Pancakes. Choices are from exotic to plain and tasty. How does Dutch bacon and cheese sound or chocolate mouse or even milk tart custard? Harrie’s popularity can be measured by the many tour buses stopping over. Waiting for a while is not time wasted. The tasty experience will be worth the wait. Share if necessary but have at least a savoury and a sweet pancake.

Silver Spoon is across the road from Harrie’s and would be considered quite nice if you were not spoiled by Harries first. Pancakes with asparagus and cheese, spinach and feta or chicken and mushroom are on offer as well as caramel or chocolate for a sweet version.

Canimambo, a Portuguese restaurant or the Loco & Coachman Grill are good alternatives once you had enough pancakes.

For self catering there is a Spar Supermarket or Tasties Take Aways.

Consider a night or two in Graskop to get acquainted with the panoramic views of Mpumalanga
