Johannesburg is much more than the business hub of South Africa. Negativity in the media creates a certain level of anxiety with tourists about traveling to Johannesburg and most travelers prefer to leave the vicinity immediately after landing at ORT International Airport.

Johannesburg might not have the mountain or an ocean but definitely has a vibe that cannot be ignored.

WHAT TO DO IN JOHANNESBURG

The Lion Park is just outside the city. Lions roam freely in different camps. It is, however, very different from the bigger Game Reserves, as lions are fed and don’t have to hunt for survival. Cubs are kept separate for a certain time and visitor interaction with the cubs is allowed.

Montecasino in Fourways is much more than just a casino. Build to represent an Italian architectural structure with many references to Italy inside makes for a great day outing. The bird park shows off the skills of their birds of prey. Little coffee shops, mysteriously lit restaurants, the Pieter Toerien Theatre and an arrangement of specialty shops can keep you occupied for quite some time.

Gold Reef City tells the tale of Johannesburg during the gold mine boom in the 1800s. A Theme Park with exciting rides will amuse young and old. The Theatre at Gold Reef City is home to indigenous musicals like African Footprint.

Newtown in the heart of the city is a newly upgraded area under the watchful eye of the Nelson Mandela Bridge. The Market Theatre that staged Anti-Apartheid’s plays long before the end of Apartheid still entertains the distinguished theatre goers.
