The original Koi people were awed by the beauty of ferns, water and wood and named this haven Knysna. Some describe it as romantic and others mystical. In the Knysna forest you expect the appearance of fairies or mythical creatures at any moment. Knysna is one of the main attractions on the Garden Route that stretches from Mossel Bay to the Tsitsikamma Forest.

WHAT TO DO IN KNYSNA
The Featherbed Nature Reserve, a South African Natural Heritage Site, is home to the Knysna Loerie and the Blue Duiker. Book a four hour, guided, trip which includes a ferry ride across the lagoon.
Till 2006 the Outenikwa Choo Tjoe ,one of the last operating steam trains in the world, was a major attraction, doing the scenic route between Knysna and George. Heavy storms in 2006 damaged the railway line so badly that millions are needed for repairs. The line from George (about 60 kilometers from Knysna) to Mossel Bay is still open. While the scenery is not as awesome on this line, the train ride is still an incredible experience.
Knysna Heads, with one of the most dangerous sea entrances in the world, can safely be seen from a ferry ride on the John Benn. The sunset cruises are spectacular and can be combined with dining or sundowners.
Woodmill Lane Shopping Center has a festive atmosphere with a supermarket, deli, arts and craft shops and banking facilities. Depending at what time of the year you visit you would be able to attend the Kinetic Water Art Show, the Open Air Music Fest or the Knysna Oyster festival.
A visit to the castles at Noetzie, just outside Knysna, can be a tiring experience but very worthwhile. Hundreds of small steps take you down to the lovely secluded beach from where the castles can be viewed. The castles used to be private residences but most are now B&B accommodation.
WHERE TO STAY IN KNYSNA
A memorable stay will definitely be in one of the castles. A view over the bay with the sound of the waves breaking on the cliffs is the best stress relieve for any tired soul.

Knysna Quays, a complex of houses on the Lagoon, has from 1 to 4 bedroom options available. Each house has its own jetty which makes it ideal for boating fans.
Even better would be to hire a house boat. Be the captain of your own house boat and explore the Garden Route. You don’t need a skipper’s license or any experience. Catered or self - catering options are available. For a once in a lifetime experience this is the way to go.
Knysna Backpackers is an old Victorian House (a listed monument) with a magnificent view of the Lagoon. Within 2 minutes stroll from the town centre and a Baz bus stop it is the best cheap stay in Knysna.
WHERE TO EAT IN KNYSNA
For seafood try the Oystercatcher Oyster Bar, on a working jetty in the Quays. While the focus is on oysters there are many other dishes to choose from which includes vegetarian and chicken dishes. Prices are very reasonable and sunset views exquisite.
The Bell Tavern is great for pub meals with pies, burgers, curry and fish amongst the favourites.
For real fine dining there is Lush with a more upmarket ambience and upmarket prices. Norwegian Salmon, Karoo Lamb and Tiger prawns are a few of the classy dishes they offer.
Fat Susi’s Bistro is a busy and bustling spot in the main street that serves great breakfast and lunch meals. Picnic baskets and cocktail platters can also be ordered here. The sweet treats are very reasonably priced and a great treat.
Visit Knysna for the magical forest where you might find a surviving elephant or a lagoon trip in one of the most scenic areas in South Africa.
