For those who are interested in some really old history, Magaliesburg is the perfect base. Right inside the Cradle of Humankind, it is a great stay for a day or two.

THINGS TO DO IN MAGALIESBURG

The Cradle of Humankind (Maropeng) is the most famous attraction in the area. The knowledgeable paleontologists on fossils claim that hominids (the ancestors of modern humans) emerged about 7 million years ago in Africa. The significant fossils “Mrs. Ples” and “Little Foot” were found in the Sterkfontein Caves in this area around Maropeng. There were rumours a while back that Mrs. Ples might be Mr. Ples. The claims are that all humankind started here in Southern Africa and everybody has their roots in Africa. Go and have a look for yourself and decide if you agree with this theory.

For something less ancient join Vertical Mountaineering for some abseiling, rock climbing or a walk on one of the hiking trails.

From Johannesburg there is a private train the Magalies Express that runs on certain Sundays for a picnic in the Magalies Country Hotel’s lush garden. The train is not associated with the public trains and stops at the hotel’s private platform.

Magaliesburg is a mere 45 minutes from the Hartbeespoort Dam so all the Dam activities are also within easy reach.

WHERE TO STAY IN MAGALIESBURG

As Magaliesburg is such an easy weekend getaway for those living in Gauteng (Johannesburg – Pretoria area), guest accommodation is readily available.

Health Spas have a big presence in the Magaliesburg Area. Mount Grace Country House and Spa has the best setting. Drive a few kilometers up the mountain and disappear into a peaceful haven. If the standard rooms are fitted with a king size bed, mini bar and heated towel rails you can just imagine what the luxury rooms would be like. The spa offers numerous hydrotherapy treatments in a tranquil area surrounded by beautiful gardens for the use of spa guests.

Many of the working farms in the area have cottages for overnight stays with a real farm atmosphere. Cottages range from basic or rustic to luxury. Kwa Manzi has such cottages, not too far out of the village, with a quiet peaceful ambience. The peacocks and horses walk around on the grass in front of the cottage. The peacocks will walk into the cottage if you allow them. The bathroom, with a Victorian bath and double shower, has a nice charm.

WHERE TO EAT IN MAGALIESBURG

Most restaurants are on site at hotels and lodges.

The Zeederberg, at Valley Lodge, caters for buffet style meals with an extensive wine list and occasional live entertainment.

Goblin’s Cove that was also mentioned in the Hartbeespoort Dam page is within easy reach of Magaliesburg. There is a lovely restaurant area outside under the trees with nice snacks and light meals. The wraps and quiches are very tasty and the chocolate cake divine.

From the ancient fossils to some hydrotherapy should capture your imagination.
