In 1487, sailing along the coast of Africa to find a route to the east, Dias encountered a ferocious storm close to area that is now known as Mossel Bay. It is widely believed that he was the one giving the name “Cape of Storms” to this southern part of Africa. He eventually threw anchor in Mossel Bay in 1488 and from there on it was developed as an export harbour. In 1601 the name changed to Mossel Bay. Mossel is the Afrikaans word for mussel. According to seafood gourmets the mussels gathered here during springtime is of the best in the world.

WHAT TO DO IN MOSSEL BAY

As the harbour and historical capital of the famous Garden Route, Mossel Bay attracts many tourists but was able to contain its village atmosphere.

The Maritime Museum is the first stop where you can board a life size replica of the Caravel Dias sailed around the Cape in 1488.

The Post Office Tree, a few meters away from the museum, has an interesting history. In 1500 Pedro de Ataide, on his return journey from the East, left a letter under this tree which was found by Joao da Nova in 1501. The first post office in South Africa was founded. This large Milkwood tree is now a national monument with a shoe shaped post box where letters can be posted. The reason for the shoe shape is because it is believed that the first letter was left in a boot.

There is also a Culture and Shell museum close by with interesting old equipment and an array of lovely shells.

Shark cage diving, bungi - jumping and Seal Island trips can all be arranged from Mossel Bay. It is possible to see whales on any of the boat trips during the whale season.

On the short route to George there are lovely little bays to explore. Victoria Bay is small secluded bay where accommodation is within 50 meters from the beach and ocean.
