Ocular migraine is also known as opthalmoplegic migraine. It is a pain often around the eye along with nausea, vomiting and diplopia also known as double vision. Migraine is also famous for being called as a vascular headache. The main cause of this illness is the sudden constriction of blood vessels in the head that reduces the flow of blood to the eye. This pain normally begins early in the morning and it will feel very intense. You will feel that there is a gripping pain on one side of your head and it seems as if it was spreading throughout your head. This lasts for hours or even days if not treated immediately. A simple sleep can remedy or give you a temporary relief from the pain. There are also times that visual disturbances can occur and this includes hallucinations just like light flashes or sparks, zigzag of lights or visual field defects. Ocular Migraine is very rare. This is because of nerve palsy and a painful migraine like this is commonly due to an internal carotid artery aneurysms and diabetes.

The common symptoms of this type of migraine are pain around the eye or somewhere the eye area of the head, nausea or sometimes even vomiting can occur if the migraine is really relentless and diplopia. Another symptom to determine if you have this illness is visual disturbances. Some of the examples of visual disturbances or some of the determinants if you are having visual disturbances are blurred vision, partial loss of vision, scotomas or having/experiencing blank spots in your vision once in a while, dimming of the vision and seeing flashes of light.

This type of migraine can be triggered by the neurological responses of the body to hormonal changes, chemicals in foods, medications or even flashing lights. In order for you not to get this type of intense headache, it is important to avoid these factors that trigger such severe headache.

During migraine attacks, you would just need to take the patient in a quiet darkened room and have the patient rest and relax. Medication also helps in treating migraine especially in giving immediate relief. Medications just like aspirin, propranolol or amitriptyline but the main drug treatment for ocular migraines are calcium channel blockers. one example of calcium channel blockers is Cardene. Cardene can be taken as a pill or maybe as a tab which you will just place under your tongue. Some research says that nitroglycerin or diamox can also help in providing relief from this kind of migraine.
