Gold was first found in this area in 1873. The founders tried to keep it a secret but once the word got out every would-be miner rushed to Pilgrim’s Rest for their share in the pot of gold. They called it Pilgrim’s Rest because here they found, after months of false trails, a place where they could settle.

The area grew from tents and shacks to a proper village with brick houses, shops, canteens, a church and the favourite Royal Hotel.

Eventually all the gold deposits were depleted and today it is a “living museum” and favourite stop for those who visit the province of Mpumalanga in South Africa. It is en route to the Kruger National Park.

WHERE TO STAY IN PILGRIM

The Royal Hotel is the only accommodation inside the town and has an old world feeling. The big veranda is ideal for a meal or a drink with a view over the mountains.

Crystal Springs, a resort overlooking a gorge, is just a few kilometers away. The resort is inside a forest with beautiful views of the setting sun. Chalets are very private with lovely grass and lots of trees. There is also a spa, entertainment area and swimming pools.

Mount Sheba is also in the vicinity and makes for a great stay.

WHAT TO DO IN PILGRIM

Visit all the craft shops in Pilgrim’s Rest, where you can buy anything from a large wooden giraffe to authentic Ndebele artworks..

Walk through The House Museum, with typical wood and corrugated iron architecture of the time. The décor and finishing is Victorian, as it was in the time of the gold rush. The Print museum displays some of the equipment that was used to hand print the news during the 1900’s. The Methodist church that was build in 1911 is still in use and services are every Sunday morning at 10:30

The Anglican Church was build in 1884 and restored in 1919. The organ is over 100 years old.

The Police station built in 1902 is still in use.

WHERE TO EAT IN PILGRIM

The Vine for a traditional South African culinary experience. Pilgrims Pantry is for the sweet tooth where traditional delicatessens like Milk Tart, Koeksusters (there is no English word for this, the closest explanantion is a doughnut in a sugar syrup) and Cheese Cake can be devoured.

In the Royal hotel are the Peach Tree with a Victorian atmosphere and Diggers Den which is more informal.

Stop over here for a few hours and find some gold in the images of times gone by.
