Liposuction is a plastic surgery procedure that treats areas of excess fat and usually improves the shape of one’s body. The surgery removes fat, but it cannot eliminate dimpling or correct skin sagginess. This kind of surgery is also known as Lipoplasty. The surgery is usually performed using different methods which have advantages and disadvantages. It can be performed through as basic technique which involves taking away excess fat using a hollow metal tube called cannula that is passed through the fatty tissue. Suction Assisted Liposuction (SAL) is one of the common types of liposuction which involves the aspiration of fat by attaching a pump used for generating a vacuum. Another type is known as power assisted liposuction (PAL). This process uses a motor on the cannula that causes the metal tube to vacillate back and forth. In addition, an ultrasonic generator may produce sound waves above perceptible frequency that breaks down the fat cells and the broken fat is removed by suction assisted liposuction. In some cases, a laser is used to break down the fat cells. During every consultation, the surgeon will discuss these various methods along with the techniques that may be used and combines to produce best possible results. It is highly recommended to discuss the procedures before providing decisions about the appropriate technique. It is important that other techniques will be performed by the patient’s plastic surgeon.

When considering this type of surgery as an option, the best candidates should have areas of fat deposits that are not in a good shape or out of proportion with your body. They should have the so called diet resistant fat or the fats that do not go away even with diet and regular exercise. Liposuction removes fat not skin so if the person has areas with minimal amounts of excess skin and good skin elasticity he or she should consider the liposuction surgery.

The surgery may be performed in an accredited hospital, ambulatory facility or office-based surgical suite by a certified plastic surgeon. The surgeon will administer medications for the patient’s comfort during the procedure. Surgeons frequently use local anesthesia and intravenous sedation for patients, even though general anesthesia may be desirable in some cases. Monitors are used to check the patient’s heart, blood pressure, pulse and the amount of oxygen in his blood. Surgeons do these to ensure the patient’s safety during the operation. After the surgery, the patient will need to rest into a recovery area to be closely monitored. He or she will be allowed to go home after a short period of observation. However, some patients prefer to stay in overnight in the surgical facility.

The surgery usually improves the shape of one’s body. Some people want liposuction to use it in a circumferential fashion or thinning an area of the body. The healing process is gradual; the patient should wait at least a number of months to get an accurate picture of the results of his or her surgery. The small incisions will fade little by little over several months. Most patients usually take liposuction before after photos to compare the results.
