The island of Mauritius has an overall relaxed and laid back atmosphere. Port Louis, the capital and largest city is the only place that comes remotely close to what we know as a busy city. Big and small businesses co-existing in the inner city, traffic congesting streets and boats entering and leaving the harbour give Port Louis that vibrant energetic feeling of a big world city.

WHAT TO DO IN PORT LOUIS

Port Louis is the obvious place for those interested in business on this paradise island.

There is no need to just focus on work as there is much to see and do in and around Port Louis.

The very modern Le Caudan Waterfront is more than willing to accept your money. Trendy international brand name stores, duty free stores and local creations make the Waterfront a great place to explore. Sarongs can be bought anywhere on the island but if you are looking for quality and exquisite colour combination, the Waterfront stores are the best.

The Central Market has an array of stalls ranging from spices and vegetables to curios, clothes and souvenirs. It is hot, busy and vendors spot tourists from a mile. It’s worth a visit but most of the same products can be bought much cheaper in the shops in Grand Baie.

The Botanical Gardens or Pamplemousses, as it is mostly called, is just North East of Port Louis. The giant water lilies in the lily pond have a diameter of 1-2 meters. If you are lucky you might see the Talipot Palm flowering. These palms grow for 30 – 80 years, to flower once and then die. The “sacred fig tree” reminds of the walking trees in Lord of the Rings.

The beautiful Pereybere is to the North for a day of sun and sea. With azure blue water and green palm leaves gently dancing in the breeze, it is a photographer’s dream.

WHERE TO STAY IN PORT LOUIS

Labourdonnais is the five star hotels at the Waterfront with the necessary business services for those on a working trip.

Just 20 kilometers to the south, in the village of Flic en Flac, is the Sofitel Imperial with wonderful spa treatments available for the sore feet at the end of the day.

Villa Jorica, situated in a lovely old colonial house, just a few minutes outside the city, is ideal for a more cosy and quiet stay.

WHERE TO EAT IN PORT LOUIS

At Le Caudan Waterfront there is no shortage of restaurants. Good food but prices are a lot higher than anywhere else on the island.

At Keg and Marlin, a traditional English pub, the outside area has a great view over the water and the boats. Drink a local Phoenix beer and watch the boats coming in.

The restaurant at Labourdonnais is La Rose des Vents which is known for its great Lobster dishes.

For those who prefer to stay with familiar names there is a Black Steer and Debonairs.

Driving or taking a taxi out to Flic en Flac will give you more options. Two popular restaurants here deserve mentioning.

La Papayou is a tiny place, very reasonably priced with a great eclectic menu.

Domaine Anna has a wonderful ambience with tables out at the lake and an extensive menu.

Port Louis is close to many exquisite beach areas so no business trip should ever be boring.
