The first governor of the Cape, Simon van der Stel founded Simon’s Town in 1743 as a winter anchorage. When the British took over in 1806 it became the base of the Royal Navy and in 1957 it became South Africa’s navy base.

WHAT TO DO IN SIMON'S TOWN

Simon’s Town is preserved in history. Victorian and Dutch architecture line the main streets and create an old world atmosphere.

The greatest attraction of this little seaside town is Boulders Beach. A colony of Jackass Penguins lives here in harmony with the people. On warm days they all splash together in the waves. Although they are friendly and very tame, they don’t like to be touched.

The Southern Right Whales come out to play from June to November. The Simon’s Town Boat Company will take you on a cruise to see these creatures from close-up. They are still considered endangered but with major international protection they are slowly starting to gain numbers.

The Warrior Toy museum and the Naval Museum, in the main street, are great for the lovers of history and old things. The toy museum has a model train running on a track, lead soldiers, cars and dolls that will fascinate old and young.

The Scratch Patch where you can collect bags full of gemstones is always a hit with children.

Simon’s Town Waterfront has a few interesting shops for browsing and boat cruises also leave from here.

WHERE TO STAY IN SIMON'S TOWN

The Winston is a four star graded guesthouse where rooms have unlimited views across False Bay as far as Gordon’s Bay and Cape Point. There are only four guest suites that make it very private and exclusive.

For an upmarket hotel experience the Quayside Hotel at the Waterfront is the place to be. It is within easy reach of the shops and restaurants.

Simon’s Town Backpackers is in the heart of town close to the railway station and Boulders Beach. You can hire a bike here for an energetic ride to Cape Point or stay the day on the balcony hoping to see a whale coming close to shore.

WHERE TO EAT IN SIMON'S TOWN

Bertha’s at the Waterfront on the edge of the water has always been the favourite in Simon’s Town. As in many of the Cape coastal towns, seafood is high on the list. The menu also caters for kids, meat eaters and vegetarians. The wonderful view, especially at night with all the lights on the water and across the bay, spells romance and mystery.

The Black Marlin, just outside Simon’s Town is another favourite, also with the focus on fish. A few meat, pasta and vegetarian dishes are available. Some interesting coffee options will conclude a perfect evening.

Take a rest from seafood at Bon Appétit for some real French fine dining. The choices are limited but quite exotic.

Simon’s Town is yet another place on the Cape Peninsula from where all the attractions of the Western Cape are within easy reach.
