Sun City was created first and foremost as a casino area. During the years prior to 1994 gambling was against the law in South Africa. Bophuthatswana was one of the homelands inside South Africa that wasn’t restricted by these laws. After 1994 Bophuthatswana was incorporated into the North West Province. Today Sun City is so much more than just a casino and hotel.

THINGS TO DO IN SUN CITY

Golf fanatics would want to stay forever. With the Gary Player and Lost City Golf courses so readily available no golfer will find anything to complain about. The annual Nedbank Golf Challenge hosted on the Gary Player Course has a price money of over $4 000 000. The Lost City Golf Course, also designed by Gary Player, has a water hazard on the 13th hole with 20 live Nile crocodiles. A true African experience on the Golf Course.

For the rest of the family that steers away from golf there is the amazing Valley of the Waves. Sun City is very far from the beach and the ocean so the developer, Sol Kerschner, created his own beach area. It is open to day visitors at a fee and to hotel and Cabana guests for free. Valley of Waves is one of the most advanced water parks in the world. Hydraulic meganisms can generate waves up to 1.8 meters every 90 seconds. Many rides like The Tarantula, The Scorpion and The Viper makes the experience exhilarating.

The Entertainment Centre has games (more focused on the young ones), a cinema and a variety of food outlets.

The Malaria free Pilansberg National Park is next to Sun City and offers those who can’t go to the Kruger National Park an opportunity to see the Big Five.

The Casino, designer shops, a variety of pools, pool bars and restaurants will occupy the rest of your time.

WHERE TO STAY IN SUN CITY

The Palace of the Lost City is the ultimate in luxury and style. Five star suites with a view of the jungle or water and personal attention to all your needs will make the other activities seem trivial. Babysitters and the Teenage club will take care of the children’s needs while you explore the pool deck, bar or restaurants.

The Cascades and Sun City Hotel have the glamour and adequate luxury at a much lower price than the Lost City.

The Cabanas are more informal, yet very comfortable and upmarket with stunning views across the palm layered gardens and pool. At a fraction of the price it is the most sensible accommodation option.

WHERE TO EAT IN SUN CITY

A variety of pool bars, restaurants and snack bars are available at all the hotels.

The Crystal Court at the Lost City has the Golden Room ,inside the restaurant, which you can book for a private dinner. The ambience at The Crystal Court is smart elegant and appropriate dress is required.

At the entertainment Centre is Squires which is a very reputable restaurant chain that specializes in steaks and seafood.

The Fishmonger is great for seafood or sushi and caters for families.

For fast food and take-aways there is a Wimpy, Nando’s and Juicy Lucy.

Sun City focuses on creating magic and once inside the walls of this little magical world nothing else seems to really matter.
