Men feel the effects of divorce differently than women, although some of the core emotions are the same. Feelings of sadness, depression and frustration are common and a sense of loss seem to be staples.

Men though tend to have greater adjustment problems than women do. Men tend to isolate themselves from their social network and not let people know how they are feeling. If the household was a two income one, they might feel the loss of the second income acutely and feel more pressure on themselves to replace it.

Men tend to remarry quicker than women do. The feelings of loneliness and need for companionship will encourage a man to seek out a new partner faster. Men feel the loss of their spouse and will not have the support to help them through it as a woman would.

Men are usually the parent who has less contact with their children. This can attribute to their depression. A man who has joint custody and has an active involvement in their child’s life will have a more fulfilled relationship with them. They also tend to be more compliant with child support payments.

Men have a more negative view on divorce than women do - usually being against it. Men will tend to want to fight for the marriage, feeling that divorce is just giving up. Even if the marriage is over a man would rather stay in it than have it end.

On the other hand, men tend to fare better financially than women when it comes to divorce. Men on average have a 42% increase in standard of living within the first year after divorce.

If men gather a good support system around them during the difficult time of divorce, they are more likely to come through it with less psychological effects. Talking to friends and family and even a professional can go a long way in the recovery process.
